I never thought about gossip being a form of self-protection. But you said it so well that I can see exactly what you mean. All sin temporarily feeds the flesh or fills a need or hurt. But only temporarily. Gossip temporarily lifts the burden of hurting for someone else's sin and keeps us from seeking God's way of bringing help and healing. I've enjoyed reading your posts and have been challenged quite often. Keep up the good work.

Hi david. My name is james and i'm about to buy a leather edition of this kjv. I have had trouble getting my head around some of the scriptures but im determined to press on. Besides, i only have to pull out an AMP or an NLT and i get edified! I'll let you know; but I'm excited.....
Hey there! Quick question that is totally off subject. Do you know the best way to make your web site mobile friendly? My web-site looks weird when viewing from my iphone. I'm attempting to uncover a template or plugin that may well have the ability to fix this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share. With thanks!

Cute poem! Anyone with a toddler can relate to that one! :)
Charging for a sermon or for a church service is an honest way to get the financing needed to keep the ministry going. Another way is through free-will giving. The best way is to teach the gospel for nothing, which is what I do.
Tithing ended at the cross, and no one should be teaching tithing today. Those who preach tithing are the ones robbing God's children. They are false teachers.
Thanks for sharing. I agree. The chapter in the book Religion Saves that discusses birth control (and stems from this sermon) provided a lot of basis for me in my decision to quit using birth control 2 months into my marriage. I had read this book prior to using birth control but I felt like his argument wasn't strong enough, so unfortunately I decided to use birth control for the first 2 months. I became pregnant 2 months afterward.
I agree that if there is the slightest chance that the pill could become abortificiant for your baby, you shouldn't take it. I don't see why he is hesitant to place a black and white stamp on this issue. I don't see how it would be legalistic to do so. I believe he may be hesitant to say "no" entirely to the birth control pill because he knows how many people in his congregation use it. John Piper takes a similar stand. I don't see how they both can be so vehemently against abortion yet not against this issue? I know it still stands to be researched, but in the meantime should we wait to find out if it really is abortive and continue in taking the pill? I don't think so. By then, possibly millions of babies could have already been aborted...never being able to implant into their mother's womb.
Once I quit birth control I felt a total peace. I relt rebellious while taking it, knowing everything that I did. I think if I had received more straightforward instruction--such as someone saying "This IS wrong", I would have never started it in the first place. I mourned for any baby that I might have contributed to in ending life to.
I have spoken to several other women who have felt the same way. Many of them keep their silence because they do not want to be labeled a fanatic or ultra-conservative. I sometimes hesitate to speak out against it myself for these same reasons.
I pray that there will come a pastor who speaks out about this issue more.

THanks for your review. Our Shepherd Group is reading it and I teach next Sunday. Your review was helpful.

In my search for Timothy Keller's position on homosexuality, I found it on your blog.
As a gay man with no problem in that, I'd like to say that TK's analogy to cars and the manuals they come with falls flat. Reason: There isn't just one kind of car, there are many, many different kinds of cars. And there's not One Manual which covers all those cars; each one comes with its own.
My "manual" says I can only be happy in a loving relationship with another guy. It further says, don't push yourself to have that relationship with a woman--and above all, don't push yourself to be celibate. Because you weren't designed that way, and in one way or another, you'll fall apart.
Of course, my point is meaningless if you believe the Bible is "the inerrant Word of God." I find that impossible to believe, both because of ongoing scientific discoveries and ongoing Biblical scholarship showing that, indeed, there have been many different versions of the Bible because many different people have had a hand in it.
(Yes, you could say that the version we have now is "God's will"--but I find that just as hard to believe.)
Anyway, I urge you not to swallow glib analogies such as TK's whole, without first examining them critically on their own terms.

Thanks, Dave! I appreciate your kind remarks about my book Hollywood Worldviews.
Check out my new novel on Amazon, Noah Primeval, I just released in November.
In that one I put myself to the test and wrote a book that reads like a movie.
It will blow your mind and imagination.
Hey friend, I appreciate your blog.
Hey friend, I appreciate your blog.
Have you heard what Mahaney has admitted doing and that he has stepped down as leader of Sovereign Grace Ministries? It looks like at best Mahaney is an exampe of do as I say vs. how he does.
The worst thing is how Mahaney blackmailed the cofounder of their group Larry Tomczak and that Mahaney hid this sin for 13 years.
A few blogs to look at are:
www.sgmsurvivors.com
www.sgmrefuge.com
www.thewartburgwatch.com
Hope this helps.
Steve, thanks for bringing this up because I was completely unaware of it. After looking into it for a bit, I praise God for the example that Mahaney is setting -- he is publicly confessing, repenting, and seeking reconciliation. Obviously his sin isn't commendable, but if we look reflectively at what he has done and compare the heart attitudes beneath it with our own hearts, I hope that we'll see places where we, too, need to confess and repent and seek reconciliation.

Apparently you haven't seen these blog posts:

It sure doesn't look like Mahaney is " is publicly confessing, repenting, and seeking reconciliation." as you seem to think, Even Covenant LIfe Church (SGM's "flagship" church) expressed concern with what Mahaney said.
Steve, I apologize for not looking at these documents more in depth. I certainly don't want to spread a mistruth, so I encourage readers to take a look at these documents more closely and to make prudent application of these events to their own lives.
